Inverness Co-operative Pioneer Kevin McCubbin Retires After 36 Years
A significant change is underway at Highland Wholefoods in Inverness as founding member Kevin McCubbin retires after an impressive 36 years with the workers’ cooperative. Since its inception in 1989, McCubbin has played a crucial role in the growth and success of the business, which is located on Harbour Road.
Highland Wholefoods operates on a unique model where all employees are also members and have equal voting rights, regardless of their position. The cooperative was established by a group of five individuals, including McCubbin, who aimed to provide the local community with access to organic food and drink, as well as vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.
Reflecting on his journey, McCubbin expressed pride in the cooperative’s evolution. “We’ve really come a long way since the original group of five people,” he stated. “It’s been incredibly rewarding to help build Highland Wholefoods from those early days into the thriving co-operative it is today.”
McCubbin acknowledged the challenges faced over the years but emphasized his enjoyment of the work. “Like all workplaces, we’ve had our ups and downs, but if I had my time again, I wouldn’t change a thing,” he remarked. He noted the importance of the relationships built over the years, saying, “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved and what the team are still working to achieve.”
The retirement of McCubbin, who has been a steady presence, leaves a notable void within the team. Colleagues have expressed a mixture of pride and apprehension, recognizing his extensive knowledge and experience. A spokesperson for Highland Wholefoods commented, “His calm, cheery presence has always brought a relaxed, steadying vibe to the workplace, and he will leave a huge hole that will be felt by everyone. There may even be a few tears!”
Highland Wholefoods currently employs 11 staff members and remains dedicated to its core principles of community values, sustainability, and ethical practices. As the cooperative continues to champion ethical shopping in the Highlands, it aims to uphold the legacy that McCubbin helped establish.
As McCubbin embarks on this new chapter of his life, the Highland Wholefoods team is committed to ensuring that the cooperative remains a vibrant and welcoming environment for the community it serves.
