Ivory Coast Stages Dramatic Comeback to Win Group F at AFCON
Defending champions Ivory Coast delivered a thrilling performance on January 3, 2024, coming from two goals down to secure a 3-2 victory against Gabon in their final Group F match at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) held in Marrakesh. This victory not only solidified their position as group winners but also set the stage for a round of 16 clash against Burkina Faso on January 6.
In a surprising start, Gabon surged ahead with two goals within the first 21 minutes. The opening goal came from veteran player Teddy Averlant, who capitalized on a defensive error to tap in a rebound in the 11th minute. Just ten minutes later, Gabon struck again on a swift counter-attack, leaving the Ivorians reeling.
Despite the early setback, the resilience that helped Ivory Coast clinch the title in 2024 was on full display. They halved the deficit just before halftime when Jean-Philippe Krasso scored following excellent buildup play with teammates Franck Kessié and Wilfried Zaha.
The Ivorians continued to press in the second half, and their efforts paid off when Evan Guessand equalized in the 84th minute, sending the Gabonese hopes of revenge crashing down after their previous World Cup qualifying defeat. The decisive moment came in the 91st minute when Christian Kofane headed home the winner, securing top spot in the group for Ivory Coast. This victory extended their unbeaten competitive streak to 14 matches as they aim for their fourth continental title.
In parallel action in Agadir, Cameroon overcame a rocky start to defeat Libya 2-1, finishing second in the group. After falling behind to an impressive strike from Mohamed Khamis, Cameroon quickly equalized through an own goal by Rami Azzuz, who inadvertently turned a shot into his own net. The match-winning goal was netted by Kofane, who struck from outside the box in the 55th minute, sealing a strong group performance with seven points from three matches.
Cameroon’s success is particularly noteworthy given the turmoil surrounding their preparations, including the dismissal of former head coach Marc Brys less than three weeks before the tournament began. Now, they are set to face South Africa, the Group B runners-up, on January 4.
Earlier in the day, Algeria capped off their impressive group stage with a commanding 3-1 victory over Equatorial Guinea in Rabat. Already confirmed as group winners, Algeria maintained their perfect record in the tournament with goals from Riyad Mahrez and Youssef Belaili in the first half. Although Equatorial Guinea managed to score a goal through top scorer Emilio Nsue, they could not overcome Algeria’s strong start.
In a direct contest for second place in Casablanca, Burkina Faso emerged victorious over Sudan with a 2-0 win, thanks to goals from Steeve Yago and Eric Traoré. Both teams advance to the knockout stage, with Burkina Faso set to meet Ivory Coast as they strive to make their mark in the tournament.
As the group stage concludes, the excitement builds for the knockout rounds, with teams like Ivory Coast and Algeria showcasing their championship potential. The tournament continues to highlight emerging talents and fierce competition among Africa’s best football nations.
