Swansea University Launches £18 Million Semiconductor Training Initiative
The UK Semiconductor Industry Future Skills (UK-SIFS) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) has been established under the leadership of Swansea University’s Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials (CISM). This initiative, supported by the UK Government Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, aims to enhance the UK’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. With a budget of approximately £18 million, the programme will train up to 60 PhD students over five cohorts, focusing on critical semiconductor skills.
The UK-SIFS initiative seeks to address the growing demand for expertise in semiconductor technologies, which are essential for maintaining a competitive manufacturing sector. By combining academic research with industry training, students will engage in four-year research projects in collaboration with leading UK companies in the semiconductor domain. This approach is designed to create a robust pipeline of highly skilled professionals capable of driving innovation in next-generation technologies.
Flexible training pathways will be available, including part-time study options for professionals who wish to undertake research while continuing their careers. A significant emphasis will be placed on retraining individuals from other high-skilled industries that may be facing reduced opportunities. This strategy aims to ensure a versatile and adaptable workforce ready to meet future demands.
The investment in UK-SIFS includes £10 million from the UK Government, alongside contributions from Swansea University, the University of Leeds, and 24 industry and civic mission partners. Training and research activities will be conducted in advanced cleanroom facilities at Swansea’s CISM and the Bragg Centre for Materials Research at Leeds, which together represent an investment exceeding £80 million. These facilities are specifically designed to foster industrial relevance, providing services such as start-up incubation to support the UK semiconductor ecosystem.
Professor Paul Meredith, Director of the Centre for Integrative Semiconductor Materials and co-Director of UK-SIFS, stated, “UK-SIFS is a completely different way of thinking about doctoral training for the UK semiconductor sector – flexible, practical training coupled with industrially relevant, world-class research.”
Co-Director Professor Edmund Linfield, Director of the Bragg Centre for Materials Research at the University of Leeds, emphasized the initiative’s broad scope. He said, “UK-SIFS will support a wide range of cutting-edge projects from across science and engineering, training the future highly-skilled and diverse workforce needed by the semiconductor sector.”
Industry leaders have welcomed this initiative as a critical step towards enhancing skills in the semiconductor field. Howard Rupprecht, Managing Director of CSconnected Ltd, remarked, “This is fantastic news for skills in the semiconductor industry and related sectors. We need to accelerate and diversify workforce provision, and this is especially important to support the rapid growth of the semiconductor manufacturing cluster in South Wales, driven by significant investment from multinationals such as Vishay, KLA, Microchip, and IQE.”
Professor Charles JM Footer, a QinetiQ Fellow, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative. He noted, “The UK-SIFS CDT announcement marks the beginning of a hugely exciting and vital investment in the future of the UK’s semiconductor capability and the next generation of world-leading scientists in the area. At QinetiQ, we recognize the strategic importance of developing a highly skilled workforce to support sovereign advanced manufacturing and national security, and we look forward very much to collaborating with the CDT.”
The establishment of UK-SIFS reflects a concerted effort to bolster the UK’s semiconductor sector and secure its position as a leader in advanced manufacturing technologies. Through collaborative partnerships and targeted training programmes, the initiative aims to equip the next generation of scientists and engineers with the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving industry.
