Denis Irwin Questions Jurrien Timber’s World-Class Status
Denis Irwin, a former Manchester United defender, has expressed skepticism regarding the classification of Arsenal’s Jurrien Timber as a world-class full-back. During a discussion on ESPN UK, Irwin acknowledged Timber’s impressive form this season but hesitated to place him among the elite defenders in football today.
Timber, who joined Arsenal for £38 million, has been a pivotal player for manager Mikel Arteta this season. He has started in the majority of league matches, solidifying his role at the Emirates Stadium. His contributions have reportedly caught the attention of Arsenal’s management, who are considering a new contract for the Dutch international.
Irwin, who made 529 appearances during his 12 years with Manchester United, praised Timber’s defensive skills but stated, “Again, a great defender, but world-class?” He compared Timber unfavorably to other prominent full-backs, such as Achraf Hakimi, Reece James, Milos Kerkez, and Andrew Robertson, suggesting they are closer to that elite designation.
Despite Irwin’s reservations, Timber’s statistics illustrate his significant impact on the pitch. He ranks in the 85th percentile for non-penalty goals plus assists per 90 minutes among players in Europe’s top five leagues. His defensive metrics are also impressive, placing him above 80% in tackles (87th percentile), aerial duels (86th percentile), and interceptions (84th percentile).
What distinguishes Timber is his versatility; he has played effectively across the backline. In matches where regular starters Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba were unavailable, Arteta deployed Timber as a centre-back and even at left-back in an EFL Cup match against Chelsea.
Marseille Set to Sign Quinten Timber
In related news, Arsenal may miss out on signing Quinten Timber, Jurrien’s brother, who appears close to joining Marseille. Reports from FootMercato indicate that the French club has reached an agreement with Feyenoord for the midfielder, with only minor details remaining. Although Arsenal had considered Quinten as a potential midfield cover option, no formal offer has been made.
Additionally, young midfielder Ethan Nwaneri is expected to move to Marseille on loan for the remainder of the season. These developments highlight Arsenal’s ongoing efforts to strengthen their squad while navigating player availability and potential transfers.
