Surrey Libraries Launch Campaign to Inspire Reading in 2026

Studies show that reading for pleasure has declined, particularly among younger audiences. This trend is often attributed to distractions such as social media, time constraints, and difficulties in maintaining focus. In response, Surrey Libraries are embarking on a mission to rekindle the joy of reading through their participation in the National Year of Reading, a comprehensive campaign set to unfold across the United Kingdom in 2026.

The initiative, led by the National Literacy Trust and supported by the UK’s Department for Education, aims to inspire individuals to discover or rediscover reading’s pleasures. Throughout the year, all 52 libraries in Surrey will participate in a variety of themed events and activities designed to engage the community. Each month will spotlight a different library, focusing on a specific theme that aligns with the campaign’s overarching message: “Go All In.”

Residents are encouraged to explore their local libraries, where they can join for free if they are not already members. The libraries offer a diverse selection of books and resources available for borrowing at no cost. In addition to traditional reading materials, patrons can access free wi-fi, computer facilities, e-books, audiobooks, e-magazines, and digital skills support. Libraries are also highlighted as welcoming spaces for learning and community well-being.

Denise Turner-Stewart, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Customer and Communities at Surrey County Council, expressed her enthusiasm for the campaign. She stated, “The National Year of Reading is a fantastic opportunity for us all to ‘Go All In’ and celebrate the joy of reading together. We will continue to champion our libraries as welcoming, inclusive spaces that inspire, connect, and empower people.”

The monthly schedule will feature different libraries taking the lead each month, including:

– February: Redhill
– March: Farnham and Staines
– April: Woking
– May: Epsom
– June: Dorking
– July: Camberley
– August: Weybridge
– September: Godalming
– October: Guildford
– November: Walton
– December: Horley

In addition to events, Surrey Libraries are also seeking volunteers. Individuals interested in contributing to their local library can engage in various activities, such as running reading groups or assisting at author events and workshops. Volunteering offers an opportunity to gain new skills, meet diverse individuals, and make a meaningful impact within the community.
