Celebrating Art and Absurdity: Luka Lagator’s Dual Exhibition
A celebration of creativity and thought-provoking performance unfolded on July 7, 2023, at the Modern Gallery in Cetinje, Montenegro, marking the dual milestone of Luka Lagator‘s 60 years of artistic work and his 80th birthday. The event featured a monograph launch and an exhibition showcasing Lagator’s paintings and caricatures, illustrating his unique perspective on art and existence.
Lagator dedicated his exhibition to the city of Cetinje, not merely as a geographic location but as a profound state of consciousness. His work reflects the idea of an internal landscape where history continuously interacts with the present. During the opening, Lagator performed “Sisyphus’ Journey,” revisiting a central theme in his oeuvre—the stone of Sisyphus, symbolizing the absurdity of human effort.
In the performance, Lagator carried a massive stone, plastered with engravings and images representing both the past and present of Cetinje. He emphasized that for him, Sisyphus transcends mythology; he embodies a universal metaphor for contemporary humanity. Lagator explained, “Every living being on this planet is ‘Sisyphus to Sisyphus,’ pushing our own stones up personal life hills, striving to reach the summit, only to face inevitable decline.”
He views the moment when the stone tumbles down the cliff not as defeat but as an opportunity for reflection. The descent, he argues, provides a space of silence and awareness, allowing individuals to contemplate their existence. Lagator’s aim with this performance is to encourage the audience to confront the absurd as an unavoidable aspect of the human condition. He stated, “Becoming aware of the absurd is crucial, as that is the only way to truly live with it.”
Expanding on his artistic vision, Lagator remarked, “I carried a large stone through this space, bringing with me my own and our Cetinje. This effort completes the image of this temple located in the upper part of the hard timber, and I have partially showcased this phenomenon in this exhibition.” He likens his work to a complex Rubik’s Cube, scattered with colors across time and space, illustrating both monochromatic depictions of past and present.
The evening also featured insights from art historians Ljiljana Zeković and Ljiljana Karadžić, along with caricaturist Darko Drljević, who discussed the significance of Lagator’s contributions to contemporary art. The event was further enriched by a musical performance from soprano Zorana Latković and guitarist Nikola Pejović, creating an atmosphere that celebrated not only artistic expression but also the essence of community and shared experience.
Through this exhibition and monograph, Luka Lagator invites viewers to explore the layers of absurdity in their lives and the world around them, urging a deeper understanding of their personal journeys in the continuous cycle of creation and reflection.
