Discovering the Origins of Pizza on World Pizza Day
Each year on February 9, food enthusiasts across the globe celebrate World Pizza Day. While pizza is synonymous with Italian cuisine, its roots actually trace back much further than many realize. The beloved dish originated in ancient Greece, where the Greeks perfected the combination of flour and water to create a flatbread.
Initially, this bread was baked beneath hot stones and topped with a mixture of oil and spices. The pizza as we know it today began to take shape only in the late 16th or early 17th century, when tomatoes were brought to Europe from the Americas. This key ingredient transformed the simple flatbread into the pizza we enjoy today.
By the 18th century, this “bread topped with tomato sauce” made its way to Naples, Italy, where it was sold in markets. The term “pizza” was already in use, and by 1830, Naples boasted the first pizzeria operating indoors. Prior to this, pizzerias existed solely as open-air stalls.
Despite pizza’s expansion across the world, Naples remains a city where pizza transcends mere sustenance; it is a cultural icon. The name pizza is derived from the Latin dialect words “picea” and “piza,” which were used in regions like Sicily and Calabria to refer to various types of flatbreads.
On World Pizza Day, various competitions and events take place in different parts of the world, celebrating this cherished dish. These gatherings highlight not only the culinary significance of pizza but also its ability to bring people together, reinforcing its status as a global favorite.
