Investigators examining the death of 23-year-old Lain Estridge, who died after an attempted police stop in Liverpool, have secured all body-worn camera footage from the officers involved. The incident occurred on February 13, 2024, around 15:15 local time, on Back Falkner Street in the Georgian Quarter. Reports indicate that Mr. Estridge lost control of his e-bike and collided with a stationary police van as officers attempted to conduct a stop.

In the days following the incident, it was revealed that the police van had moved forward moments before Mr. Estridge fell from his e-bike. Following the crash, officers restrained him before realizing he required medical assistance. A week later, a memorial has emerged at the site, featuring a banner that reads “forever in our hearts, long live Lain.” Friends, family, and community members have left flowers, photographs, and heartfelt messages in his memory.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has been actively investigating the circumstances surrounding Mr. Estridge’s death. An IOPC spokesperson stated, “Our thoughts remain with the family and loved ones of Lain Estridge, as well as all those affected by his death.” They reported that all available body-worn video footage, along with CCTV and police dashcam recordings, has been reviewed to understand the events leading up to the tragedy.

A post-mortem examination was conducted the day after Mr. Estridge’s death, but the results have yet to be disclosed, and the cause of death remains undetermined as further testing is underway. Liverpool’s coroner has confirmed that the case has been referred, but details on when it will be opened are not yet available.

Calls for transparency have been echoed throughout the L8 community, with local MP Kim Johnson emphasizing the need for clarity regarding the investigation. “The public deserves to know the full truth—what happened, why it happened, and who is accountable for the death of this young black man,” Johnson stated. “Anything less than complete transparency will only deepen our community’s pain and anger.”

Fatima Adan, a representative from Granby Somali Women’s Group, highlighted the prevailing hurt and anger within the community. “If the police ask for support and cooperation from the community, it has to work both ways,” she remarked. “At the end of the day, a young man has died, and a family is grieving. The community needs clarity, not silence.”

The IOPC has outlined the sequence of events on the day of the incident. Mr. Estridge was among two men approached by police positioned at either end of Back Falkner Street South. As he rode away on his e-bike, officers on foot, accompanied by a police van, approached the junction. The van moved forward and was partially obstructing the road when Mr. Estridge fell, colliding with the vehicle.

Following the incident, officers initially restrained Mr. Estridge before recognizing his need for medical attention and providing first aid. Paramedics discovered a package in his mouth, which was subsequently removed. Amanda Rowe, IOPC director, expressed condolences to Mr. Estridge’s family and reassured ongoing communication as the investigation progresses.

Merseyside’s police and crime commissioner, Emily Spurrell, stated, “The IOPC has confirmed it will carry out an independent investigation, and I am assured that Merseyside Police is fully cooperating with this process.” She urged the public to refrain from speculation while the investigation takes its course to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

As the investigation unfolds, the community continues to seek answers regarding the tragic events of February 13, emphasizing the necessity for transparency and accountability to honor Mr. Estridge’s memory.
