Barcelona Reconsiders Marcus Rashford’s Future Amid Bench Time
Barcelona is reportedly reassessing their decision regarding the permanent transfer of Marcus Rashford from Manchester United. Initially, the club indicated plans to activate the £26 million clause in his loan agreement, allowing them to secure the forward’s services for the long term. However, recent developments suggest that Barcelona may have reservations about this decision.
Rashford joined Barcelona on a temporary basis and has had a mixed season. While he was a consistent starter earlier in the campaign, he has recently found himself on the bench more frequently. Notably, he did not feature at all in the La Liga matches against Real Oviedo and Levante. His most recent appearance came during the Champions League match against Newcastle United, where he played for the final 20 minutes. Despite scoring twice in the previous encounter between the two teams, his lack of starting opportunities raises questions about his future at the club.
According to the Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, the 28-year-old now faces the challenge of proving his worth in the upcoming matches. While indications remain that a permanent transfer is still a possibility, it is suggested that Rashford must demonstrate improved performance during the end-of-season run-in to solidify his position within the squad.
Further complicating the situation, Barcelona is reportedly interested in Chelsea forward Pedro Neto, who can operate effectively on either wing or as a false nine. If the club pursues Neto, it could heighten competition for places in the squad and jeopardize Rashford’s chances of making his move permanent, potentially leading him back to Manchester.
Throughout the season, Rashford has scored 10 goals and provided 13 assists in 38 appearances across all competitions for Barcelona. However, his last goal came at the end of January during a 3-1 victory over Elche.
Rashford’s future may also be influenced by the upcoming presidential election at Barcelona, scheduled for March 15, 2024. Current president Joan Laporta is running for re-election against candidates Victor Font and Marc Circa. Should Laporta secure another term, it is likely that Deco will remain as the sporting director, and the club’s transfer strategy will continue as planned. However, a shift in leadership could lead to a reevaluation of transfer targets, including Rashford’s potential acquisition.
Overall, as Barcelona navigates the complexities of their squad and transfer plans, the next few weeks will be critical in determining Rashford’s fate at the club.
