Doctor Warns of Summer Skin Issues Linked to Underwear Choices

A medical professional has raised concerns about a common skin condition that can worsen during the warmer months, particularly due to underwear choices. Doctor Sooj, a physician associated with the NHS, highlighted the increased incidence of intertrigo—a painful skin irritation that often occurs in the groin area—especially as temperatures rise.

This warning comes as Doctor Sooj reported treating multiple cases of intertrigo in recent months. He explained how conditions such as heat and moisture create an environment conducive to this skin issue. “We see more cases in warmer and more humid months,” he stated, noting that this time of year often leads to excessive sweating, particularly in skin folds.

Intertrigo manifests as a red, inflamed rash that can become increasingly uncomfortable if not addressed promptly. Doctor Sooj recounted a particularly severe case involving a patient with obesity who developed a serious form of intertrigo. “The skin was red, raw, and had started oozing with signs of bacterial infection,” he said. This condition limited the patient’s mobility and required treatment with antibiotics and antifungal medication.

The doctor emphasized that while intertrigo may seem minor, it can significantly impact daily life if it escalates. He stated, “If not managed properly, it can break down the skin barrier and become secondarily infected, leading to painful, weepy rashes or even abscesses in severe cases.”

Understanding Intertrigo

Intertrigo is an inflammatory skin condition caused by friction between skin surfaces, which is worsened by heat and moisture. Commonly affected areas include the groin, armpits, and under the breasts. The condition typically presents as a reddish rash, often accompanied by itching and discomfort.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, initial symptoms may include a symmetrical rash with small bumps in areas where skin rubs against itself. If left untreated, intertrigo can lead to more severe symptoms, such as cracks, bleeding, and secondary infections.

Doctor Sooj advised that individuals experiencing a rash in the groin area should consider altering their underwear choices. “If you’re wearing high-riding boxers or briefs and develop irritation, switching to a different style may alleviate the friction,” he suggested. He particularly recommends light, breathable cotton underwear to help reduce the risk of skin irritation.

Preventive Measures and Additional Health Considerations

To prevent intertrigo, maintaining dryness and cleanliness in affected areas is crucial. Doctor Sooj emphasizes the importance of thoroughly drying skin after bathing and opting for loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics. Seamless underwear designs can also help minimize chafing in sensitive areas.

This summer, health experts caution that intertrigo is not the only condition to be mindful of. Dr. Nisa Aslam, a general practitioner, noted that vaginal infections, such as thrush and bacterial vaginosis, are more prevalent during hot weather. These infections stem from vaginal dysbiosis, which can be exacerbated by heat and moisture.

Dr. Philippa Kaye, another GP, has also pointed out the types of underwear that can contribute to skin irritation, stressing the importance of making informed choices.

As the weather continues to heat up, awareness of these health issues is vital. Taking proactive steps to choose appropriate undergarments and maintain proper hygiene can lead to a more comfortable and healthy summer.
