Amazon Prime Video’s new spy thriller, Butterfly, has quickly ascended the platform’s rankings, currently holding the third position in its top ten list. Premiering on August 13, 2025, this six-part series is set in the vibrant city of Seoul, South Korea, and features a gripping tale of international espionage.

The series stars Daniel Dae Kim, known for his roles in Lost and The Good Doctor, as David Jung, a semi-retired gun-for-hire. The plot kicks off in an upscale hotel where a politician is targeted for assassination by a secretive and affluent private intelligence agency. The young assassin, Rebecca, portrayed by Reina Hardesty, finds her next target is David, a highly skilled agent who is drawn back into a world he thought he left behind.

Adapted from a graphic novel by Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett, the story unfolds as David attempts to protect his family while confronting past demons. As Kim describes it, the series aims to explore the complex theme of trust, particularly within family dynamics. He stated to USA Today, “A central question in our entire season is, ‘Who can you trust?’ And just because they’re family, can you trust them?”

Critical Reception and Viewer Engagement

Since its debut, Butterfly has garnered a 71% rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, reflecting a generally positive reception. Praise has been directed towards its “wall-to-wall action,” with Collider highlighting the series’ engaging narrative. The AV Club lauded its compelling performances and focused storytelling, stating that the spycraft elements feel both elevated and entertaining. Additionally, TV Guide characterized the series as “slick” and a “solid spy series.”

Despite the favorable reviews, not all critics were impressed. The Hollywood Reporter suggested that the show “needed more time in the chrysalis,” indicating potential areas for improvement. This mixed feedback invites viewers to form their own opinions as they engage with the series.

Kim, who served as an executive producer, has hinted at the potential for a second season, expressing optimism about the show’s future. “There’s a lot more story to tell, and there are places for all of our characters to go that I find really intriguing,” he noted. He added, “Let’s hope people like it enough to make that happen.”

Other Titles on Amazon Prime Video

As viewers dive into Butterfly, they may also explore other offerings on Amazon Prime Video. Among them is Gunpowder, featuring Kit Harington as Robert Catesby, the figure behind the infamous 1605 plot to blow up the House of Lords. Another title, The Assassin, stars Keeley Hawes as a mother reconnecting with her estranged son. Additionally, Outlander: Blood of My Blood has recently released its first episodes, capturing the attention of fans.

With its blend of action and emotional depth, Butterfly is proving to be a noteworthy addition to Amazon’s streaming lineup. As the series continues to climb in popularity, audiences eagerly await its unfolding narrative.
