Lloyds Banking Group is set to close 16 branches across the UK in January 2026, further impacting local high streets. This decision forms part of a broader initiative, with an additional 40 Lloyds branches and 15 Halifax locations expected to shut down by the end of 2026.

The bank’s spokesperson acknowledged the shift in banking habits, stating, “The way people are banking has changed, with over 21 million customers choosing our apps to manage their money.” The spokesperson emphasized that Lloyds is focusing on providing greater digital convenience while maintaining customer access through physical locations.

According to data from Which?, there have been more than 6,600 bank and building society branch closures in the UK since January 2015, which translates to an average of approximately 53 closures each month. This trend has affected several banks, including Lloyds, Halifax, NatWest, and Ulster Bank. Notably, Barclays has faced the most significant impact, closing 1,236 branches.

In response to the upcoming branch closures, Lloyds will introduce ‘Community Bankers’ in the affected areas. These representatives will offer support and banking services where local branches are no longer available. Customers can find their nearest Community Banker using an online search tool provided by Lloyds. The bank’s website states, “Community Bankers are here to help if you don’t have a local branch. They offer banking services and account support.”

Additionally, customers can access basic banking services at local Post Office branches. These services include cash withdrawals, cheque deposits, and account balance inquiries, though more complex services, such as account openings and loan applications, will not be available.
