Angie Best Shares Hospital Update on Cancer Treatment Journey
Angie Best, the former wife of football legend George Best, has shared a heartfelt update from her hospital bed as she undergoes treatment for colon cancer. The 73-year-old posted an emotional photograph on Instagram, revealing her experience with an alternative form of chemotherapy in a medical facility located in Switzerland.
In the image, Angie is seen sitting upright in bed with an intravenous drip, surrounded by medical equipment. This post follows the announcement by her son, television personality Calum Best, that she has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has metastasized to her liver.
Angie captioned the image, “Trying to fake a smile, didn’t realise how sick I was, couldn’t wait so in Switzerland for chemo with Mistletoe, a sincere heartfelt thank you to you my Homies for your kindness.” Mistletoe therapy, which utilizes extracts from the European mistletoe plant, is employed in various parts of Europe, including Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. While some practitioners assert that it may boost the immune system and enhance quality of life, its effectiveness remains a topic of debate within mainstream medicine. The treatment is not routinely offered by the National Health Service (NHS) in the UK, as major cancer organizations consider the evidence for its efficacy inconclusive.
Despite her alternative approach, Angie is also receiving conventional chemotherapy. Her recent post has sparked a wave of support from fans and friends alike. Calum Best, aged 44, expressed his admiration in the comments, stating, “You are some woman and I love you so much. We got this.” Other public figures, including television presenter Jenny Powell, sent messages of positivity and encouragement, with Powell writing, “Sending you all positive and healing vibes right now.” Model Paul Sculfor also conveyed his well-wishes, saying, “Wishing you strength and wellness.”
Angie has openly expressed skepticism towards traditional cancer treatments, recently resharing a post that referred to a so-called “cancer scam.” This post included claims that medical experts widely regard as unfounded.
In a recent emotional appeal, Calum Best disclosed that he has created a GoFundMe page to help cover the costs of Angie’s specialist treatment abroad. He shared, “My mum has been diagnosed with colon cancer that has spread to her liver. To move forward, we need access to specialist care and professionals who can offer the right treatment. This is incredibly hard for me to say, but financially, I can’t carry this on my own.”
In a message accompanying her son’s fundraising initiative, Angie stated she is “ready to fight,” acknowledging that the financial burden of consultations and treatments has been significant.
Angie Best first met George Best at a dinner party in Los Angeles in 1975, shortly before he signed with the LA Aztecs. The couple married in 1976 and welcomed their son, Calum, in 1981. They separated in 1982 and divorced in 1986, amid George Best’s ongoing struggles with alcohol abuse and domestic violence. He passed away in 2005 at the age of 59 due to multiple organ failure related to alcoholism.
Bowel cancer, which affects the colon and rectum, presents symptoms including blood in stools, changes in bowel habits lasting more than three weeks, unexplained weight loss, persistent fatigue, and abdominal pain. According to Bowel Cancer UK, over 41,000 people are diagnosed with this disease each year in the UK. While survival rates are significantly higher when caught early, many cases are diagnosed at a later stage when the cancer has already spread.
Angie Best’s journey highlights the ongoing challenges faced by those battling cancer, as well as the emotional and financial implications of seeking treatment.
