Toddler’s Subtle Head Tilt Reveals Rare Brain Tumor Diagnosis
A seemingly innocent head tilt in one-year-old Capri Hilsden led to a devastating diagnosis of a rare and aggressive brain tumor. Her mother, Elissa Hilsden, sought medical advice after a friend observed the child’s posture in photographs. Despite initial assessments by doctors at Bedford Hospital, which attributed the tilt to an ear infection, further concerns about Capri’s health prompted a critical CT scan that revealed the grim truth.
After celebrating her first birthday in November, Capri displayed cold-like symptoms that her mother attributed to her transition into nursery. Elissa attempted to secure a doctor’s appointment through an online triage system, but was informed that the symptoms were likely viral and would resolve on their own. A text from a friend, however, raised alarms about the child’s head position, prompting Elissa to review recent photos and videos. “I felt so guilty for not having noticed it,” she admitted, noting that subtle changes can be overlooked in daily life.
Increasingly troubled by the head tilt and the appearance of her daughter’s right eye, which appeared vacant at times, Elissa returned to the GP. This time, they were referred back to Bedford Hospital, where doctors initially suggested an ear infection as the cause of the symptoms. After a week of antibiotics, Capri’s condition did not improve, leading her family to seek further evaluation.
A CT scan ultimately revealed the heartbreaking diagnosis: an Embryonal Tumour with Multilayered Rosettes (ETMR), a rare and highly aggressive form of childhood brain cancer. Elissa described the moment of diagnosis as one where “everything crumbled.” On November 18, 2023, Capri underwent a 12-hour brain surgery at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where surgeons managed to remove about 80% of the tumor.
Post-surgery tests confirmed the ETMR diagnosis on November 22, with doctors warning the family that without further intervention, they could have as little as two months left with their daughter. Complications arose when Capri developed sepsis during recovery, necessitating a transfer to intensive care.
Following stabilization, she was taken to Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool, where advanced imaging technology allowed surgeons to remove additional tumor tissue. This surgery opened the door to chemotherapy, and on December 20, Capri began her first of six rounds of intensive treatment.
Elissa and her husband, Anthony Hilsden, have dedicated themselves to caring for their daughter throughout this harrowing journey. The couple has spent over a month living in the hospital, often sleeping by Capri’s side during her surgeries and recovery. In a bid to manage the financial burden of their situation, they launched a fundraiser, aiming to raise £50,000 to cover travel costs and necessary home adaptations. As of now, they have raised £34,000.
Christmas was particularly challenging for the family, spent in the hospital. Despite the circumstances, Elissa recounted efforts to make the holiday special for Capri. The hospital staff organized festive activities, and even facilitated a surprise visit from Santa, complete with presents. “Care at Addenbrooke’s goes beyond medicine,” Elissa remarked, highlighting the compassion shown by the healthcare team.
The family continues to navigate this difficult chapter, with the hope that the ongoing treatment will lead to a positive outcome for little Capri. As they balance the emotional and financial demands of her care, they remain grateful for the support from their community. For those wishing to contribute, the couple’s GoFundMe page is available for donations.
