Andy Murray’s Grandfather Roy Erskine Passes Away at 94
Roy Erskine, the grandfather of renowned tennis player Andy Murray, has passed away at the age of 94. His death occurred on January 19, 2026, and has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the community in Dunblane and beyond. Erskine was remembered as a beloved figure, particularly for his contributions to local sports and his close ties to his family.
A Life in Sports and Community
According to a heartfelt statement from his former club Stirling Albion, Erskine was a talented athlete, having played both tennis and professional football. He began his football career as a full back for Hibernian, and later played for Stirling Albion and Cowdenbeath. He joined Albion in August 1954 from Troon Juniors and remained with the club for two seasons before moving to Cowdenbeath.
In recent years, Erskine regularly attended events at Stirling Albion alongside his daughter, Judy Murray. He enjoyed engaging with supporters and reminiscing about his experiences with the club. The club highlighted his pride in celebrating their League 2 championship win in the 2022-23 season, underscoring his lasting connection to the community.
Tributes and Memories
The news of Erskine’s passing has elicited a flood of tributes on social media. Friends and fans have shared their condolences, reflecting on the warmth he brought to their lives. June Campbell described him as a “lovely man” who was always eager to engage in conversation at his grandson’s tennis matches. Kelly-Marie Wilson expressed her sadness, noting that it was always a pleasure to chat with him.
“He was a well-known and popular figure in Dunblane where he spent many years as an optician. He will be sorely missed,” reported the Daily Record.
Erskine’s legacy extends beyond his athletic achievements; he was a devoted family man. Following Andy Murray’s retirement from professional tennis, Erskine had looked forward to spending more time with him, his wife Kim, and their four great-grandchildren. In a conversation with the Daily Record in 2024, he expressed his pride in his grandson’s illustrious career and his hopes for more family time.
Reflecting on Murray’s final match, Erskine remarked, “The final game wasn’t too emotional for us because it had been talked about for some time. We realised Andy was stopping after the Olympics. The family are all very proud of Andy and what he has achieved in that time.”
Roy Erskine’s passing marks the end of an era for his family and the community he cherished. His contributions to sports and his impact on those around him will not be forgotten.
