Vučić Dismisses EU Delegation, Asserts Serbia’s EU Commitment
Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić has reaffirmed Serbia’s commitment to its European path, despite belittling the recent visit from a delegation of the European Parliament. In remarks made upon his return from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Vučić characterized the visiting officials as “unimportant people” and accused the pro-European opposition of undermining the state’s interests.
During an interview on pro-government channel TV Prva, Vučić stated that his discussions in Davos were more significant than those with the European parliamentary delegation in Belgrade. He expressed dissatisfaction with the opposition’s demands for personalized sanctions against Serbian officials alleged to be involved in corruption and repression of protests and civil society.
Vučić criticized the nine-member delegation from the Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, suggesting they were insignificant figures in their own countries and only relevant to the Serbian opposition. He described their approach as “brazen and irresponsible,” particularly highlighting the opposition’s engagement with the EU on sensitive issues.
Formation of an Operational Team for EU Integration
Later in the day, Vučić led an expanded government meeting, where he called for the establishment of a dedicated operational team to oversee Serbia’s European integration efforts. He proposed that the team be headed by Danijel Apostolović, Serbia’s ambassador to Brussels, and include key ministers such as Nemanja Starović for European integration and Nenad Vujić for justice, along with Ana Brnabić, the President of the National Assembly.
The team is expected to provide regular updates on progress toward EU membership, reflecting Vučić’s intent to streamline Serbia’s integration process amid ongoing criticisms from the EU regarding democratic standards and reform implementations.
European Parliament’s Support and Concerns
During the visit, Marta Temido, head of the European Parliament delegation, emphasized the EU’s strong support for Serbia’s membership and highlighted the urgency for Serbia to adhere to EU values, including democracy and the rule of law. Temido stated that advancing on the European path “requires full respect for EU values, democracy, the rule of law, and fundamental rights.”
She raised concerns about the current state of democracy in Serbia, pointing out issues related to media freedom, electoral reforms, accountability, and freedom of expression as vital for restoring public trust in institutions. The delegation reportedly received troubling reports regarding repression against demonstrators and the academic community.
Following the visit, European Democratic Party officials remarked that Vučić’s dismissive reaction to the delegation’s visit was “not a trivial incident” but rather “a concerning signal.” They noted that neither Vučić nor Brnabić met with the European parliamentarians, with Vučić attending the Davos forum and Brnabić visiting Estonia.
In their statements, they reiterated that the European Union does not interfere but actively monitors elections and demands transparency. They called for adherence to democratic standards, stating that “a true European future requires rules, freedoms, and responsibility—not propaganda or intimidation.”
This ongoing tension between Serbia’s government and the European Parliament underscores the complexities of Serbia’s journey toward EU membership, as both domestic and international pressures shape the political landscape.
