Duchess of Edinburgh Empowers Women During Kenya Tour

The Duchess of Edinburgh, Sophie, is currently on a tour of Kenya to promote women’s leadership and empowerment, particularly in conflict zones. This initiative comes at a crucial time, just ahead of International Women’s Day, as she highlights the essential role women play in peacebuilding efforts across regions like Somalia and Kenya. Her visit is part of a broader commitment by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to support victims of gender-based violence in war-torn areas.

On the second day of her tour, Sophie visited Wajir, where she engaged with local women at the Hodhan Business Group. There, she utilized a UK-funded mobile payment system to purchase a tea flask from a local entrepreneur, showcasing her support for local businesses. The Duchess emphasized the significance of economic independence, noting its positive ripple effects on the entire community. She also participated in a traditional dance, further connecting with the local culture and children.

During her time in Wajir, Sophie met with Governor Ahmed Abdullahi Jiir at the Governor’s Office. Their discussions focused on the pressing challenges posed by climate change, particularly how resource scarcity can lead to political instability in the region. This conversation underscored the interconnectedness of socio-economic issues and women’s empowerment.

Earlier in her visit, Sophie spent her first day in Nairobi, where she met with William Ruto, the President of Kenya. Their meeting centered on strengthening the strategic partnership between Britain and Kenya. Later, she visited the Kazuri Beads workshop to engage with women artisans, enjoying traditional music and purchasing a pair of earrings as a gesture of support.

The Duchess also attended a lunch organized by the British Chamber of Commerce and a reception hosted by the Women in Leadership group, led by Dr. Ed Barnett, the British High Commissioner to Kenya. That evening, she participated in a dinner aimed at promoting women’s roles in governmental leadership. According to Faith Odhiambo, President of the Law Society of Kenya, Sophie discussed enhancing women’s leadership in areas such as peacebuilding and security.

Sophie’s ongoing commitment to raising awareness about the struggles women face in conflict zones is evident in her recent visit to Somalia. Arriving in Mogadishu on February 23, 2024, she met with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud to discuss the vital role women can play in fostering peace. In a visit to a village in Lower Shabelle, she listened to the wives of Somali soldiers who shared their fears regarding the militant group al-Shabaab and the difficulties they encounter at home.

The Duchess’s experience in Somalia included a tour of a hospital where she witnessed the impact of UK-funded sexual and reproductive health services. Engaging in heartfelt conversations with victims of gender-based violence, she learned about their harrowing experiences with practices such as female genital mutilation and sexual assault.

Throughout her engagements, Sophie has consistently demonstrated her dedication to advocating for women affected by conflict. Her previous visits to countries like Ukraine, Kosovo, and Colombia have focused on similar issues. Notably, during her visit to Ukraine in 2022, she met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and First Lady Olena Zelenska, delivering a personal message from the King.

Sophie addressed the emotional weight of her travels, stating that those who endure violence are the true embodiments of bravery. In an op-ed for The Times, she remarked, “The brave people are those who have endured extreme violence and survived. The courageous are those who have reported the crimes committed against them. I am glad to have made the journey. Inevitably, it was sad and emotional, and the painful stories and images…will live with me.”

The Duchess of Edinburgh’s tour is not only a campaign for women’s rights but also a call to recognize the challenges women face in conflict zones and the critical role they play in peacebuilding efforts.
