Holocaust Memorial Day will be observed in Lynn on January 27, 2024, with a commemorative service at the town hall. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the service being held in Lynn, coinciding with the national observance established to remember the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides.

Service Details and Participants

The event will commence at 12:00 PM and feature readings from Cllr Andy Bullen, the borough mayor, and Deputy Lieutenant David Flux. Students from the town’s St Martha’s Catholic Primary School Choir will perform, alongside children from Greyfriars Primary School. Additional participants include West Norfolk Police Inspector Ben Jarvis, Rev Canon Dr Mark Dimond, members of the local Jewish community, police cadets, and representatives from the Lynn Soroptimists.

A spokesperson from West Norfolk Council highlighted this year’s national theme of “bridging generations.” This theme underscores the importance of ensuring that the lessons and memories of the Holocaust are preserved, particularly as fewer living witnesses remain.

Significance of the Date

Holocaust Memorial Day is observed on January 27, commemorating the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945. The day serves not only to honor the six million Jews who perished during the Holocaust but also to remember victims of other genocides, including those in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur.

The observance is rooted in the Stockholm Declaration, where 46 countries pledged to remember and educate future generations about the atrocities committed by the Nazis. The service in Lynn aims to foster understanding and remembrance, ensuring that such tragedies are neither forgotten nor repeated.

As the community gathers to reflect and honor the memories of those lost, the event serves as a poignant reminder of the ongoing need for education and awareness regarding the Holocaust and other acts of genocide throughout history.
