Mikeysline Urges Support for Those Struggling This Christmas

A prominent mental health and suicide prevention charity, Mikeysline, is urging communities in the Highlands, Islands, and Moray to remember that no one needs to face the holiday season alone. This message comes ahead of the festive period, which can be particularly challenging for many individuals. Founded in 2015 after the tragic deaths of friends Martin Shaw and Michael Williamson, Mikeysline recently celebrated its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of vital support services.

Originally established with a simple yet powerful concept—a ‘text-for-help’ hotline operated by volunteers—the charity has evolved into a comprehensive organization offering both text-based and one-on-one support. Mikeysline has expanded its reach into schools and workplaces, providing tailored talks and launching two Hive on the Road mobile support vehicles to further assist those in need.

Continuing Support During the Festive Season

Throughout the Christmas season, Mikeysline will maintain its text support services for individuals experiencing emotional distress or suicidal thoughts. In addition to text-based services, face-to-face and online appointments can be arranged, subject to availability, through the charity’s website.

Emily Stokes, CEO of Mikeysline, emphasized the complexity of emotions that can arise during the holidays. She stated, “While Christmas can be a joyful time for many, it can also bring significant emotional challenges—especially for those experiencing loneliness, grief, financial worries, or mental health concerns.” Stokes highlighted that societal expectations to feel happy can exacerbate feelings of sadness, anxiety, or isolation.

Mikeysline aims to foster an environment where reaching out for help is viewed as a sign of strength. Stokes reiterated the importance of communication, affirming that “it’s OK not to be OK, and that one conversation can start to change things for the better.”

Community Engagement and Events

As part of its ongoing efforts to support mental health, Mikeysline is also hosting a charity gig in Inverness, featuring an Oasis tribute band. The event seeks to raise awareness and funds for both Mikeysline and Headspace Highlands.
