The Irvings of Bonshaw Celebrate Historic Clan Heritage
The Irvings of Bonshaw have marked a significant milestone in their long-standing heritage, with a clan history that traces back to 1506. Recent research reveals records extending as far back as the 1120s, reinforcing the clan’s deep historical roots. The meticulous documentation of this lineage is encapsulated in *The Book of the Irvings*, compiled by Colonel J.B. Irving in 1907. This achievement is all the more remarkable considering it was completed without the aid of modern technology.
This historical work has been recognized in multiple prestigious institutions globally, including the House of Commons Library in the UK, as well as libraries in Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, notably the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. To ensure the accuracy of this historic text, professional researchers from the Association of Scottish Genealogists and Record Agents (ASGRA) cross-referenced its contents, resulting in a validation rate of approximately 98%, with only minor discrepancies identified.
The lineage of the Irvings of Bonshaw is particularly noteworthy. Following the passing of Rupert Irving’s father in 2021, the current chief sought to continue the tradition of matriculating the clan’s arms. This process was formally recognized by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in March 2021. The arms date back to William Irving of Bonshaw, who was the first to be recorded in the 1672 Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland, a legal repository of registered coats of arms.
Clan Leadership and Responsibilities
The role of Clan Chief carries significant weight, evolving alongside the modern era while maintaining a commitment to preserving clan history and identity. Both Rupert Irving of Bonshaw and Alexander Irvine of Drum, the current Chief of the Irvines of Drum, are actively involved in the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs. Established in March 1952 in Edinburgh, this council collaborates with clan societies and governmental bodies to promote Scottish heritage globally and support heritage tourism within Scotland.
The council currently boasts over 135 members, representing nearly all major clans and families in Scotland. This year, the annual meeting saw Lord Charles Bruce, the grandson of the founding Convener, take on the role of Convener, succeeding Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor.
Celebrating Scottish Heritage Through Tartan
The Irvings of Bonshaw are also recognized for their distinct tartan, officially registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. The ‘Irving of Bonshaw’ tartan is specifically designed for those affiliated with the old Scots Border Clan, while the ‘Irvine’ tartan is available to the wider Irvine and Irving diaspora. Both tartans are celebrated for their aesthetic appeal and versatility, suitable for both formal and casual attire.
As interest in Scottish heritage continues to rise, the upcoming Tartan Day in 2026 is set to feature a parade with around 2,500 participants, where clan chiefs will take a prominent role. Past events have highlighted a strong sense of community among participants, showcasing the vibrant culture and unity within the Scottish clans.
The ongoing growth of interest in family history and Scottish heritage has led to increased engagement with clan members worldwide. The website www.clanirving.com serves as a primary contact point for inquiries, reflecting a commitment to supporting those exploring their Border Reiver ancestry.
Overall, the Irvings of Bonshaw exemplify a rich heritage that continues to thrive, bridging the past with the present while embracing responsibilities that come with their esteemed lineage. The clan’s enduring legacy contributes significantly to the broader narrative of Scottish history and culture, ensuring that its identity remains relevant in today’s society.
