New research indicates that several baby boy names are losing popularity and may be on the verge of extinction within the next few years. According to an analysis by gifting website Personalisedbee, based on data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), certain names are likely to drop out of the top 100 most popular boys’ names by 2026.

The study highlights that the names Brody, Mason, and Toby are experiencing the steepest declines in popularity. Notably, the name Brody has fallen dramatically, dropping from 82nd to 99th place in just one year. In 2024, only 553 boys were named Brody, a significant decrease from 630 in 2023. This shift marks Brody as the biggest faller of the year, suggesting it could disappear from the top 100 entirely in the near future.

Mason, another name losing traction, fell 13 positions, moving from 50th to 63rd place. In the previous year, 1,118 boys were given the name, but that number plummeted to 806 in 2024. This decline showcases a broader trend where even once-popular names are not immune to changing preferences among parents.

Toby, a classic name, also experienced a notable drop, falling 10 places from 76th to 86th. The name was used for 678 boys in 2023, but this figure decreased to 621 in 2024. This gradual decline reflects a shift towards more contemporary or fashionable alternatives as parents seek names that resonate more with current trends.

Prashant, a naming specialist from Personalisedbee, provided insights into these changing dynamics. He explained, “Names are a lot like trends in fashion or home décor. They can rise quickly when they feel fresh or modern, but just as fast they can fall out of favour as parents hunt for something new and unique.” He further noted that names like Brody, Mason, and Toby were once popular but are now being replaced by options that feel more current or timeless.

The full list of names facing potential extinction includes:

As parents continue to navigate the complex landscape of baby naming, these findings serve as a reminder of how quickly trends can change. The allure of unique and modern names often drives the decision-making process, leading to the decline of names that were once commonplace.
