The green energy transition is not solely about technological advancements; it is driven by the dedicated individuals working tirelessly behind the scenes. Three professionals—Mike Amos, Grzegorz Kędzierski, and Chris Akehurst—embody the spirit of this movement, each playing a crucial role in the renewable energy sector.

Saving Lives Offshore

Mike Amos, an offshore paramedic, navigates the challenges of providing medical care in some of the most remote locations, such as the South China Sea and the North Sea. His work includes responding to emergencies like heart attacks or injuries caused by severe weather conditions. While real emergencies are rare due to his strict adherence to health and safety protocols, Amos’s role extends beyond immediate medical care.

He understands the mental health challenges faced by his predominantly male colleagues, who often work for weeks away from home. “Sometimes, men come to me with physical complaints, but underlying issues often need addressing,” he explains. His approach combines medical expertise with genuine concern for the well-being of the crew, creating an environment where they feel comfortable sharing their struggles.

Amos balances his demanding offshore schedule with family life, spending time with his wife and children during his leave. He also pursues continuous professional development to stay ahead in his field. “You have to have continuous personal development to stand out from the crowd,” he notes, reinforcing the importance of ongoing education in the ever-evolving energy sector.

Sky High and Grounded

Grzegorz Kędzierski, known as Greg to his colleagues, works as a commissioning engineer, ensuring that the electrical systems of wind turbines are safe and functional. His job requires him to climb high into the air, often using ladders to reach the tops of turbines that can exceed 150 meters in height. Once there, he checks each electrical connection and software system, essential for the turbines to operate efficiently and safely.

His journey has taken him from Poland to various locations across the globe, including the Mekong Delta in Vietnam and the icy waters of the North Sea. Kędzierski thrives in the offshore environment and enjoys the thrill of working in such dynamic conditions. “I don’t get seasick,” he asserts confidently.

Despite the challenges of working away from home, he finds solace in his passion for flying. After initially pursuing a career as a commercial pilot, he redirected his focus back to the wind industry due to the pandemic’s impact on aviation. Now, he enjoys flying acrobatic planes in his spare time, drawing parallels between the precision needed in both fields. “Safety and precision are critical in everything we do,” he remarks, highlighting the importance of meticulous planning in offshore operations.

Power, Precision, and People

As an offshore client representative, Chris Akehurst oversees the construction of massive wind turbine foundations. His role is pivotal in transforming plans into reality, requiring exceptional logistics and teamwork. “People don’t realize just how huge these turbines are,” he explains, noting that some can reach heights of 240 meters from sea to the tip of the blade.

Akehurst’s responsibilities include overseeing the placement of heavy steel piles and coordinating the efforts of a diverse team of professionals from around the world. He emphasizes the human element in these operations, stating, “Every lift, every connection—there’s human judgment behind the technology.” The collaborative nature of the work fosters a deep sense of camaraderie among the crews, who often come from various cultural backgrounds.

Currently based in Taiwan, Akehurst manages everything from the initial foundation laying to the installation of the last turbine. He is particularly impressed with the emerging talent in Asia’s renewable energy sector, observing a growing pride among local technicians and engineers. “Countries like the UK and Germany are ahead in renewables but risk a shortage of skilled workers,” he warns, underscoring the need for cultivating new talent.

Each of these individuals exemplifies the human spirit driving the green transition. As the world increasingly turns to renewable energy, the stories of people like Mike Amos, Grzegorz Kędzierski, and Chris Akehurst remind us of the dedication and expertise required to harness the power of nature sustainably. Their commitment ensures that the winds of change continue to blow strong, shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
