Moray Council Libraries Launch New Research Tools for Community
Moray Council has introduced two significant research tools for library members, enhancing access to historical and genealogical resources. Library users can now explore the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, both of which are designed to deepen understanding of history and personal heritage.
The British Newspaper Archive is now available at local libraries, allowing patrons to conduct free searches across millions of newspaper articles from various regions. Users can access this extensive collection simply by using their library membership cards. This initiative opens a gateway for individuals interested in researching historical events and societal changes documented in newspapers.
In addition to newspapers, the Ancestry Library Edition allows users to trace their family histories. This resource includes an array of UK records, such as births, deaths, marriages, military service, and more. Notably, users can access UK census records, parish records, and immigration and emigration records, enriching their understanding of personal and familial backgrounds.
To utilize these resources, library computers are available free of charge, although it is advisable to book in advance to ensure availability. Users can also connect to public Wi-Fi to access these tools on personal devices, making research more convenient.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, Chair of Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new digital offerings. “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community,” she stated. “Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The introduction of these research tools marks a significant enhancement in the services offered by Moray Council libraries, fostering a greater appreciation for history and personal heritage within the community. With the availability of such comprehensive resources, library members can now engage more deeply with both their pasts and the historical narratives that have shaped society.
