Moray Libraries Launch New Research Tools for Community Access
Moray Council libraries have recently introduced two significant research tools that will enhance access to historical information for all library members. The addition of the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition allows users to delve into a wealth of resources, facilitating exploration of both history and genealogy.
With the British Newspaper Archive, library users can now access millions of newspaper articles from around the world. This service, available for free with a valid library membership card, enables individuals to conduct searches and view historical newspapers directly from local library facilities. The platform is designed to enrich the community’s understanding of historical events and trends through accessible documentation.
In parallel, the Ancestry Library Edition provides powerful tools for those interested in tracing their family history. Available in all libraries across Moray, this resource includes comprehensive UK records such as births, deaths, marriages, military service records, and census data. Users can explore parish records and immigration/emigration details, offering a robust framework for genealogical research.
Library computers are available for public use, although it is advisable to book in advance to ensure access. Alternatively, patrons can connect to the library’s public Wi-Fi to utilize these resources on personal devices, making it convenient for users to engage with the tools from various locations.
Cllr Kathleen Robertson, who chairs Moray Council’s Education, Children’s and Leisure Services committee, expressed enthusiasm about the new offerings. She stated, “We’re delighted to offer these new digital resources to our community. Whether you’re researching your family tree or exploring historical events, these tools provide a wealth of information right at your fingertips.”
The introduction of these resources underscores Moray Council’s commitment to enhancing educational and community services through modern technology. By integrating these advanced research tools, the council aims to improve access to valuable information, empowering residents to connect with their heritage and gain insights into the past.
As library members begin to utilize the British Newspaper Archive and Ancestry Library Edition, Moray Council anticipates a significant increase in engagement with local history and personal heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for the community’s cultural narratives.
