Scientists Pursue Pristine Comets for Cosmic Insights
The search for pristine comets, which hold clues about the early solar system and beyond, is gaining momentum with two major missions set to explore these cosmic time capsules. In a recent episode of Physics World Stories, host Andrew Glester delves into the significance of these icy bodies that remain largely untouched since the solar system’s formation.
Pristine comets differ from their more familiar counterparts, which often approach the Sun and undergo changes. These ancient relics serve as valuable archives of our cosmic heritage. The episode features insights from Tracy Becker, the deputy principal investigator for the Ultraviolet Spectrograph on NASA’s Europa Clipper mission. Becker discusses the mission’s recent focus on the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS, which made its appearance in July 2025.
Research teams quickly acted to observe 3I/ATLAS, harnessing this rare opportunity not only to study the comet but also to test the spacecraft’s instruments before its journey to the icy moon Europa. The observations from this mission could yield vital information about the composition of the comet and the early solar system.
Another significant undertaking in this field is the upcoming Comet Interceptor mission, a collaborative effort between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA). Set for launch in 2029, this mission aims to “park” in space until a suitable comet emerges from the outer solar system. The team plans to deploy two probes that will study the comet from various angles, providing a first-ever close examination of material that has remained untouched since the solar system’s birth.
This blend of innovative missions and meticulous cosmic detective work highlights the ongoing quest to understand our universe. As scientists continue their search for these pristine comets, each mission contributes to a broader understanding of our place in the cosmos.
