Emergency Response: Montenegro Army to Build Bridge in Donja Gorica
Heavy rainfall has led to a significant flooding crisis in Montenegro, prompting emergency measures as authorities respond to the ongoing situation. As of now, while water levels are receding in many areas, the situation remains critical in Danilovgrad, where residents have been evacuated from their homes. Traffic has been suspended on multiple roads due to the adverse conditions.
In Kolasin, minor damage has been reported to local roads, while in Cetinje, floodwaters have begun to withdraw. In the capital, Podgorica, intensive cleaning efforts are underway for the Mareza Canal, which has been completely blocked at several points. The water level of Skadar Lake is slightly rising but is not causing significant issues in Zeta and Tuzi. In Donji Štoj, flooding that nearly affected homes has also begun to recede.
As part of the emergency response, Saša Mujović, the Mayor of Podgorica, announced during a live broadcast on TVCG that the Montenegro Army will begin the installation of a new pontoon bridge to address flooding issues. He commended local residents and non-governmental organization activists for their efforts in tackling the crisis. Mujović also praised the contribution of the Montenegro Army, specifically Minister Krapović and Minister Šaranović, for their significant roles in managing the emergency.
While acknowledging the challenges ahead, Mujović stated that the situation is currently under control, although he expressed concern about the unpredictability of natural disasters. He noted, “With natural disasters, it is very difficult to make any predictions, and the situation can change minute by minute.” The installation of the new bridge is aimed at removing a natural barrier that has contributed to the flooding.
Mujović pointed out that the current crisis is a reflection of unresolved issues from the past. He explained, “What we are witnessing today is a consequence of past neglect. A channel that was supposed to drain excess water has become an obstruction due to the irresponsibility of certain individuals, putting both property and lives at risk.” The mayor expressed hope that this situation would prompt a change in attitudes towards urban infrastructure and lead to a more responsible approach to civic values.
Looking ahead, Mujović announced plans to clean the majority of the Mareza Canal, which spans a total length of 8,500 meters, by the year 2026. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of various agencies, including the DOO “Deponija” and local departments responsible for road maintenance and inspections, emphasizing the unity in addressing such a serious issue.
The Mayor also identified additional problems near the so-called DJ arena at the stadium in Donja Gorica, describing the situation as very complex. He concluded, “There is no rest, even during holiday days. We are faced with the task of resolving issues that have been ignored for years, putting the safety of our citizens at risk.” The collective efforts of the community and emergency responders will be crucial in navigating through this challenging period.
