Erling Haaland’s Unique Approach: Why He Refuses to Wear Gloves
Norwegian striker Erling Haaland has garnered significant attention for his impressive performance in the English Premier League, scoring 100 goals in just 111 matches since joining Manchester City in 2022. However, beyond his goal-scoring prowess lies a unique personal philosophy, particularly regarding his refusal to wear gloves during matches, a decision deeply rooted in his upbringing.
Haaland attributes his “old school” approach to the game to his father, Alfie Haaland, who was known to discipline him for even considering the use of gloves on the pitch. In a recent interview, Haaland stated, “I like the old school kind of, you know, the charming thing of running, tackling, all these kinds of things. It’s a nice thing and also, you never see me playing with gloves. It’s because my father would hit me if I did.”
Influence of Family and Early Aspirations
The role of Alfie, who played for Manchester City between 2000 and 2003, extends beyond mere discipline. He has been a guiding force throughout Erling’s career, offering insights and advice that have shaped his development as a footballer. Interestingly, Alfie once harbored dreams of his son becoming a professional golfer. “You know, it’s actually funny because his biggest dream was me becoming a professional golfer,” Haaland explained. “When I was 10, he forced me to start golf. So I played golf every week from when I was 10 to 13.”
Despite this early exposure to golf, Haaland’s passion for football prevailed, leading to his rise as one of the most prolific strikers in the sport. His dedication to football is evident not just in his training but also in his daily life. Haaland admits to being an avid football fan, often watching games even during dinner. “We were eating dinner and I checked if there were any games. My missus said, ‘I’m so sick of football, we watch it all the time,’ and I’m like, ‘yeah, that’s the reason why we are sitting here.’
Haaland’s Physical Style of Play
While Haaland’s goal tally is impressive, it is his physicality and endurance on the field that set him apart. Known for his relentless running and tackling, he embodies a style of play that many consider reminiscent of earlier generations of footballers. This combination of skill and tenacity has earned him a reputation not only as a talented forward but also as a fierce competitor.
As his career progresses, Haaland’s commitment to maintaining an “old school” philosophy will likely continue to resonate with fans and aspiring players alike. His approach, shaped by family values and a deep-seated passion for the game, exemplifies a unique blend of tradition and modern football.
For now, fans of Manchester City can look forward to more exceptional performances from Haaland, who remains focused on his goal of scoring and contributing to his team’s success, all while staying true to his roots.
