Frank Addresses Spence’s Reaction After Substitution in Loss
Thomas Frank, manager of Brentford, acknowledged that defender Djed Spence faced criticism for his reaction after being substituted during a 3-0 loss to Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. This incident marks the second time this season Spence’s behaviour has raised eyebrows, following a previous episode on November 1, 2023, where he appeared to disregard instructions to acknowledge the home fans after a 1-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur.
In his comments, Frank emphasized the importance of learning from such experiences. “His reaction didn’t look the best,” he stated. “I spoke to him. He was disappointed because he thought he was being subbed off due to an injury, which was not the case.” Frank highlighted that Spence, at just 25 years old, is still developing and sometimes struggles under the pressure of high expectations.
Learning from Experience
Frank noted that these incidents necessitate additional attention and discussion, which he prefers to avoid in press conferences. “It’s best if we haven’t had to discuss it,” he remarked. “He is aware that it didn’t look the best, and we are dealing with young people. You learn from mistakes and aim to do better in the future.”
Despite the recent turmoil, Spence is expected to be included in the starting lineup when Brentford faces Tottenham on Saturday. However, speculation about his position remains, especially given the mounting competition for spots in the squad.
Another player under scrutiny is Brennan Johnson, who has seen limited game time. Rumours suggest a potential January transfer, despite Frank expressing a desire to retain his leading scorer from last season. “I think we will be playing a lot of games, so it’s important to have enough options,” Frank explained.
Squad Dynamics and Future Prospects
While acknowledging the current competition within the team, Frank stated, “Overall, I’m happy with Brennan. He trained well on Friday.” He also pointed out that the introduction of new players, such as Mohammed Kudus, has increased competition for places on the team. “Not that he can’t play on the left,” he added, stressing the need for a robust squad as the season progresses.
Brentford’s upcoming fixtures will be crucial as the team looks to improve their standings in the Premier League. With the pressure mounting, both Frank and his players are focused on maintaining their performance and learning from past experiences. As they prepare for the challenge ahead, the emphasis remains on teamwork and resilience in the face of adversity.
