PSG’s Safonov Fractures Hand During Penalty Shootout Triumph
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) goalkeeper Dmitry Safonov sustained a fractured hand during his outstanding performance in a penalty shootout that secured the Intercontinental Cup for the club on December 6, 2023. Safonov made an impressive four consecutive saves, leading PSG to its first global title amidst dramatic celebrations that followed the victory.
During the exuberant celebrations, Safonov was lifted into the air by his teammates, marking a significant moment for both the player and the club. Following the match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique shared insights on the injury, indicating that the fracture likely occurred during the shootout. “I can’t explain anything, it’s incredible. The player doesn’t know how it happened,” Enrique stated in comments translated on Friday.
Enrique elaborated that the injury might have happened on the third penalty kick, describing it as a “strange movement” that led to the fracture. Remarkably, Safonov managed to save the final two shots despite the injury, with the adrenaline from the situation helping him to perform without immediate pain. “It’s incredible the ability to help the team that the players, including Safonov, have, to always be ready to help the team,” Enrique added. “That’s the attitude we want.”
Player’s Resilience and Future Assessment
In a brief statement shared via the social media platform Telegram, Safonov did not specifically address the incident but conveyed a resilient spirit: “You know, no matter what happens, I can’t be broken.” This attitude reflects the determination that has characterized his approach to the game.
PSG announced that Safonov’s condition would be reassessed in three to four weeks, indicating a careful approach to his recovery. The goalkeeper, who serves as the club’s Russian backup, had not played any minutes for PSG until recently, following an ankle injury to first-choice goalkeeper Gauthier Chevalier. Chevalier has been sidelined since November 29, 2023, paving the way for Safonov’s unexpected heroics.
As PSG prepares for its next match against fifth-tier team Vendee Fontenay in the Coupe de France, the club is focused on maintaining momentum after their Intercontinental Cup triumph. Enrique emphasized the importance of staying grounded despite the success, stating, “I don’t think about what we have done. I think about the present, which means the day’s training session and Saturday’s match.”
In reflecting on the year, Enrique acknowledged the significance of the Intercontinental Cup victory, calling it an unforgettable achievement while urging the team to remain concentrated on future challenges. “Everyone in Paris thanks me, but it’s my job. We’re privileged to represent such a club, so we have to stay on this same path,” he concluded.
