Hull City Eyes £10 Million Deal for Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United
Hull City is reportedly considering a permanent transfer for Joe Gelhardt from Leeds United, with a valuation claim of up to £10 million emerging amid discussions. The young forward has made a notable impact since returning to the MKM Stadium on loan, and his long-term future has been a topic of interest for both clubs.
Gelhardt, who rejoined Hull City in August 2023, has been pivotal in the team’s attempt to secure a play-off position in the Championship. His initial loan move last season, orchestrated under previous manager Ruben Selles, saw him score five goals in just 20 appearances, contributing significantly to the club’s survival in the league. The 23-year-old’s performance has reignited fan enthusiasm, leading many to call for a permanent solution when the transfer window reopens.
Current Status and Potential Future
Currently sidelined due to a calf injury, Gelhardt is expected to return by the end of January 2024. His ten goals this season have kept Hull City firmly in contention for the play-offs, despite the club facing a significant injury crisis.
Fans have expressed a strong desire for the club to secure Gelhardt’s services permanently. According to Hull City fan pundit Cameron Gibson, a fee of around £10 million could be necessary to complete the transfer. Gibson noted that while Hull’s current transfer embargo limits their options, they may be able to negotiate a deal once the restrictions are lifted.
Gibson adds, “If Hull City are serious about being a ‘big dog’ in the Championship and pursuing promotion, they need to sign players like Joe Gelhardt.” He further indicated that while a team newly promoted to the league could easily offer more, Gelhardt’s preference for Hull City could play a crucial role in the negotiations.
Leeds United’s Considerations
Gelhardt’s career trajectory has been closely tied to Hull City since his teenage years when he gained attention for a stunning equaliser while playing for Wigan Athletic in 2019. After Wigan’s relegation, Leeds secured his talents for £1 million. Since then, he has made 57 appearances for Leeds, scoring three goals and providing seven assists.
With 18 months remaining on Gelhardt’s contract at Elland Road, Leeds United faces a strategic decision. They must weigh whether to continue covering his wages or consider a more cost-effective sale to Hull City. Gibson opined that if Leeds opts to transfer Gelhardt, they could potentially allow him to leave at a reduced price to alleviate their wage bill.
Acun Ilicali, Hull City’s owner, has also voiced optimism about securing Gelhardt’s permanent signing. He acknowledged the forward’s dedication to the club, stating, “I think Gelhardt is a special person, and for us, our target is to be with him permanently.” He expressed confidence in the club’s ability to manage the situation effectively.
As the January transfer window approaches, Hull City supporters remain hopeful that Gelhardt’s impressive form will lead to a successful negotiation for a permanent deal, solidifying his place in the team’s future aspirations.
