Janet Street-Porter Celebrates Fifth Wedding with Performance
On February 4, 2024, Janet Street-Porter captivated an audience at the South Holland Centre in Spalding during her one-woman show, “Off The Leash.” The appearance came shortly after she married for the fifth time at the age of 79 to Peter Spanton. This performance allowed fans to celebrate with her during what she humorously referred to as her honeymoon.
A Night of Laughter and Reflection
Street-Porter, known for her candid and often cheeky demeanor, entertained a full house with her trademark wit. Dressed in a sparkling green two-piece outfit, she drew the audience into her world, sharing anecdotes from her childhood and reflecting on her complex relationships with family, particularly her mother and sister. Her storytelling held the audience rapt, with moments of laughter punctuated by poignant reflections.
During the performance, she made light of her recent wedding, joking, “I never thought I would be spending my honeymoon in Spalding, but here we are.” This playful approach resonated with the audience, many of whom found inspiration in her career and straightforward outlook on life. Notably, some husbands appeared to keep a low profile, perhaps wary of her quick-witted remarks.
Street-Porter’s career spans decades in television and print media, having worked with notable figures such as Michael Aspel. In the first act, she revisited pivotal moments that shaped her journey, discussing her upbringing in a working-class family and how those experiences influenced her professional choices. The second act featured a lively Q&A session that showcased her unfiltered personality, with audience members asking questions ranging from her decision to retain her surname after her marriage to Tim Street-Porter to her views on exercise.
Empowerment Through Honesty
In her characteristic frank manner, Street-Porter explained that keeping her surname provided a more substantial byline in print, an insight that struck a chord with many in attendance. Her advice, grounded in realism, included a cynical take on relationships and a humorous suggestion to embrace life without constraints. “Live life off the leash,” she advised, encouraging her audience to pursue their passions unapologetically.
As the evening concluded, attendees left feeling invigorated and entertained. Street-Porter’s blend of self-deprecating humor and genuine storytelling fostered a sense of connection, and her ability to engage with the audience made for a memorable night. Many left the theatre inspired, contemplating their own narratives and perhaps even considering lengthening their names for a more prominent byline, just as she had. Janet Street-Porter remains a national treasure, proving that age is no barrier to love or creativity.
