Minnesota United Set to Finalize James Rodríguez Contract
Minnesota United is finalizing a deal to sign international star forward James Rodríguez, as confirmed by a source to ESPN. If the agreement is completed, Rodríguez will not be classified as a designated player, and the contract will be short-term, lasting at least through the upcoming summer’s 2024 FIFA World Cup. The 34-year-old has been a free agent since December, when his contract with Club León expired, prompting him to seek a new club to maintain his competitive edge ahead of the tournament.
Under new manager Cameron Knowles, Minnesota aims to adopt a more expansive style of play, and Rodríguez’s creativity is expected to significantly contribute to this objective. His proficiency in set pieces could enhance an area that was a strength for the club last season. The conclusion of his time with León underscores the nomadic nature of Rodríguez’s recent career, which has seen him play for several clubs across different leagues.
Since a two-year loan from Real Madrid from 2017 to 2019, Rodríguez has had stints at Al Rayyan, Everton, and León. Last season, he made 14 appearances for León, scoring three goals and providing two assists. However, it is on the international stage where Rodríguez has consistently excelled. He won the Golden Ball at the 2024 Copa América, contributing one goal and six assists as he led Colombia to the final, where they narrowly lost to Argentina 1-0.
Rodríguez boasts an impressive record with the Colombian national team, having made 122 appearances and scored 31 goals. He is anticipated to remain a key attacking threat for Colombia in this summer’s World Cup. His notable achievements include winning the Golden Boot at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil, where he scored six goals and assisted two, helping Colombia reach the quarterfinals.
Rodríguez began his professional career with Envigado in Colombia before moving to Argentine club Banfield in 2008. He has since played for several prestigious teams, including Porto and Real Madrid.
The Athletic was the first to report on the advanced discussions between Rodríguez and Minnesota United, highlighting the potential impact of his signing on the club’s aspirations for the upcoming season and beyond. As the deal approaches completion, fans and analysts alike are keen to see how Rodríguez’s experience and skill set will contribute to Minnesota’s ambitions on the field.
