McCarthy Embraces Potential Reunion with Rodgers in Pittsburgh
PITTSBURGH — In his first official address as head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mike McCarthy made it clear that he would welcome the return of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. During a press conference on Tuesday, McCarthy expressed his enthusiasm for the possibility of reuniting with Rodgers, with whom he won a Super Bowl while coaching the Green Bay Packers. “I mean definitely. I don’t see why you wouldn’t,” McCarthy said, chuckling at the question about Rodgers’ future.
McCarthy acknowledged the emotional toll that the game takes on players and emphasized the importance of allowing veterans like Rodgers time to make decisions about their future. “I think that time away is important,” he noted, reflecting on the need for players to decompress. While McCarthy and general manager Omar Khan have not set a deadline for Rodgers to decide, they are preparing for the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft.
Steelers’ Quarterback Situation Uncertain
The Steelers face uncertainty at the quarterback position, having only selected Will Howard from Ohio State in the sixth round last year. Howard spent most of the recent season on injured reserve due to a broken finger. McCarthy expressed optimism about Howard’s potential, saying, “I’m really excited about Will Howard. He’s someone that I thought really came on there at Ohio State. I’m anxious to work with him.” The coach also mentioned the importance of developing both Howard and fellow quarterback Mason Rudolph.
Before taking the head coaching role in Pittsburgh, McCarthy had an extensive career that began in the early 2000s as an offensive coordinator. His experience includes developing notable quarterbacks such as Rodgers and Dak Prescott. McCarthy stated, “The quarterback position, to me, is a huge challenge because you don’t have the individual time that the other positions have.” This understanding of quarterback development was a key factor in the Steelers’ decision to hire him.
Steelers Seek Best Coaching Fit
McCarthy is the fourth head coach for the Steelers since 1969 and the first with a background in offense during that time. He confirmed that he will take on the responsibility of calling plays. Art Rooney II, the team president, emphasized that the search for a head coach was not limited to a specific profile, stating, “We came into this wanting to hire the best coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers.” This approach led to interviews with several candidates, including defensive coordinators Brian Flores and Anthony Weaver.
Ultimately, Rooney described the decision to hire McCarthy as “obvious,” citing his impressive resume and ability to connect with players. As the Steelers prepare for the upcoming season, McCarthy’s focus will be on building a cohesive coaching staff and addressing the team’s quarterback situation. With the draft approaching, all eyes will be on the Steelers as they navigate this pivotal moment in their franchise history.
