Mekalister Affirms Support for Montenegro’s EU Membership Path
David Mekalister, the chair of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to Montenegro’s path towards membership during a recent visit to Podgorica. This visit coincides with Montenegro’s progress in closing another chapter in its EU accession negotiations, marking a significant step forward in the country’s European integration efforts.
EU Progress and Future Goals
Addressing the media at the European House in Podgorica, Mekalister highlighted the importance of Montenegro’s ongoing reforms and the support from its citizens. He stated, “We continue to support Montenegro’s journey to become a member of the EU.” He emphasized that the progress made in closing six chapters within the negotiations demonstrates Montenegro’s dedication to EU membership, which he described as a strategic goal set for 2028.
Mekalister noted that each candidate country is evaluated on its individual progress. “Focus should be on the strategic objective, which is EU membership by 2028. The emphasis must be on reforming core issues, including judicial reforms and a robust judicial response to crime and corruption,” he added.
Next Steps and Regional Engagement
Following his visit to Montenegro, Mekalister is scheduled to travel to Tirana, further engaging with the region’s EU aspirations. His remarks underscore the EU’s proactive role in encouraging reforms that align with European standards, which are essential for Montenegro’s EU accession process.
The ongoing dialogue between Montenegro and EU representatives reflects a broader commitment to fostering stability and cooperation in the Western Balkans. As the country advances in its negotiations, it faces the challenge of implementing necessary reforms to address issues that have long hindered its progress.
This visit and the discussions held are seen as pivotal moments in reinforcing the EU’s support for Montenegro and its future within the European community. As the country navigates its path toward membership, continued engagement and reform will be critical to fulfilling its ambitions.
