Nuno Mendes’ Late Header Secures PSG Victory and Top Spot
Nuno Mendes scored a decisive header in the final minutes, leading Paris Saint-Germain to a 2-1 victory against Strasbourg and reclaiming the top position in Ligue 1. The match took place at the Stade de la Meinau on March 15, 2024, and was anything but straightforward for the defending champions, who played the last 15 minutes with ten men.
The match started with Senny Mayulu giving PSG the lead in the 20th minute. However, the home team quickly equalized through Guela Doue just five minutes later. The game shifted dramatically when Achraf Hakimi received a red card after a VAR review for a foul on Joaquín Panichelli in the 75th minute. This left PSG facing a numerical disadvantage, yet they managed to secure the win just nine minutes later.
Strasbourg had shown their intent early on when Diego Moreira threatened PSG’s goal, forcing goalkeeper Matvei Safonov into action. The home side was awarded a penalty in the 20th minute after Marquinhos was deemed to have handled the ball. However, Panichelli’s attempt was saved by Safonov, marking a turning point in the match.
While PSG initially struggled to capitalize on their chances, they took the lead on the counter-attack when Mayulu scored from close range after a well-timed assist from Bradley Barcola. The visitors’ advantage was short-lived; just five minutes later, Doue found the net with a well-placed header from a cross by Ben Chilwell, leveling the score at 1-1.
As the match progressed, both sides had opportunities to take control. Julio Enciso and Hakimi tested the Strasbourg defense, but neither could find the net. The turning point came when Hakimi, already on a yellow card, was shown a second yellow after a challenge on Panichelli, leading to his dismissal.
Despite the setback, PSG’s determination shone through. In the 81st minute, Mendes rose to the occasion, heading in a corner taken by Warren Zaire-Emery to put PSG back in front. Strasbourg attempted to respond, with Doue nearly equalizing again from a corner in the 84th minute, but could not direct his header on target.
As the match neared its conclusion, Strasbourg intensified their efforts to find an equalizer. Martial Godo had a late opportunity in stoppage time, but his shot was blocked, ensuring that PSG held on for the victory, which pushed them back above Lens in the league standings.
The win not only boosts PSG’s position in the league but also highlights their resilience in challenging circumstances, especially following a demanding 1-1 draw against Newcastle in the Champions League just four days prior.
