Slovenia Stages Dramatic Comeback Against Switzerland in Handball
In a stunning turnaround, the Slovenian handball team overcame a significant deficit to defeat Switzerland 38-35 in Oslo. Trailing by as much as nine goals at the 33-minute mark, Slovenia’s remarkable performance not only secured victory but also a place in the main round of the European Championship. This win follows their narrow triumph over Montenegro, where they edged out with a score of 41-40.
During the match against Switzerland, three players stood out, each contributing six goals: Andraž Makuc, Domen Makuc, and Domen Novak. Blaž Janc and Kristjan Horžen added five goals apiece, while goalkeeper Jože Baznik made seven saves. On the Swiss side, goalie Nikola Portner recorded eleven saves, with Gino Stinerts and Noam Leopold each scoring six goals.
With this victory, Slovenia now holds four points in their group, three points clear of the Faroe Islands, whom they will face on Tuesday at 20:30. Meanwhile, Switzerland remains at one point, putting Montenegro in a position to potentially surpass them in Group D standings. Montenegro’s hopes hinge on a win against the Faroe Islands and a loss for the latter against Slovenia.
The stakes are high for Montenegro, as a strong performance could help them avoid the secondary qualification round for the World Championship scheduled for March 2024, where they would face Finland. Should Montenegro finish third in their group, they will directly enter the playoff round in May, likely facing challenges as they could be among the less favorable seeds.
To secure a favorable position in the playoff draw, Montenegro requires a decisive victory against Switzerland. A comprehensive win could place them in the first seeding tier, a crucial factor as two of the least performing third-place teams from the preliminary rounds of the EHF Euro 2026 will also be in the second tier.
As the group progresses, the matches not only impact team standings but also shape the future of players and national pride. Slovenia’s comeback against Switzerland is a testament to their resilience and determination, setting an exciting stage for the upcoming matches in the championship. The dynamics of Group D continue to evolve as teams strive for advancement and glory in European handball.
