Celtic manager Martin O’Neill recently acknowledged his intent to scout talent at Motherwell, particularly in light of ongoing interest in Zimbabwean forward Tawanda Maswanhise. The 23-year-old player has made a significant impact since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, scoring three goals in his last three matches, including the decisive goal in Motherwell’s recent Scottish Cup victory over Ross County.

O’Neill was present at Fir Park on Saturday to observe Maswanhise and assess potential new recruits. His attendance comes as Celtic struggles to enhance their squad, having secured only one signing this month, Julian Araujo, on loan from Bournemouth. Following Celtic’s 2-0 win against Auchinleck Talbot, O’Neill emphasized the necessity for reinforcements ahead of their upcoming match against Hearts.

In his post-match comments, O’Neill remarked, “That was a football mission. I went there after training with Mark Fotheringham. I would like to say I enjoyed the game. You’re testing me to the utmost.” He did not deny that Maswanhise is among the players he is considering for a potential transfer, stating, “There are players here capable of playing at a higher level.”

O’Neill’s side faced challenges in their cup tie against Auchinleck Talbot, a team from the West of Scotland Premier League. Johnny Kenny opened the scoring in the first half, but it was not until Seb Tounekti secured a second goal late in the match that Celtic could confirm their progression to the next round. “We weren’t fantastic,” O’Neill admitted. “We had a lot of possession but we weren’t able to break the team down, and when we did create chances, we missed them.”

The manager indicated that the 10 changes he made to the lineup after their previous match against Falkirk may have disrupted the team’s rhythm. “I think making changes does disrupt the flow of things,” he said. “But we saw that one through, which was good.”

Despite their victory, O’Neill’s side faced criticism for their performance, with Talbot winger Kyle McAvoy suggesting that the outcome might have varied had the match been held at their home ground, Beechwood Park. The Ayrshire club had wished to host Celtic but were informed by local authorities that the game needed to be relocated.

McAvoy noted, “It definitely would have been easier and it would have been a different experience for Celtic.” He highlighted the challenges of playing on a plastic pitch and the limited facilities at their ground. Talbot manager Tommy Sloan praised his team’s effort, saying, “I’m very proud. The effort was fantastic. We’d like to have been more adventurous and tried to threaten their goal more, but I’m not going to complain about it.”

As Celtic prepares for a crucial week ahead, O’Neill remains hopeful of adding to his squad. He stated, “We are very hopeful we will get someone in before then.” The manager’s focus on creativity and a new striker illustrates his commitment to strengthening the team as they continue to pursue success in the current season.
