Xabi Alonso Demands Truth in Barcelona Referee Payments Scandal
Xabi Alonso, head coach of Real Madrid, has expressed his support for club president Florentino Pérez in calling for transparency and accountability in the ongoing investigation into payments made by FC Barcelona to a former referees’ committee vice president, José María Enríquez Negreira. In a press conference on Tuesday, Alonso emphasized the need for clarity, stating, “for the good of football, we need to find out the truth of what happened.”
Investigation Background
The investigation centers around over €7 million (approximately $8.2 million) paid by Barcelona to companies connected to Negreira between 2001 and 2018. These payments have raised serious questions regarding the integrity of Spanish football. On March 1, 2024, key figures including Barcelona president Joan Laporta and former coaches Luis Enrique and Ernesto Valverde testified in front of Judge Alejandra Gil, who is leading the inquiry.
During a recent Christmas reception for the media, Pérez labeled the Negreira case as “the biggest scandal in the history of football,” criticizing the Spanish refereeing system and football’s governing bodies for their handling of the situation. He suggested that the investigation has highlighted the need for “radical change” in Spanish football, even hinting that some clubs may have faced relegation as a result of the scandal.
Calls for Accountability
Alonso reiterated the sentiments expressed by Pérez, underscoring a collective demand for accountability within the sport. “We share the position of the club and the president,” he stated. He pointed out that the ongoing investigation, which has lasted for over two and a half years, is critical for restoring confidence in the sport. “We’re all human and make mistakes. But here, there was a case that needs to be investigated,” he added.
Barcelona has acknowledged the payments but maintains that they were made for scouting reports on referees. Alonso noted that there is widespread surprise internationally regarding the lack of consequences stemming from the situation, emphasizing that it is abnormal and unacceptable.
The newly formed Spanish referees’ union, AESAF, has publicly criticized Pérez’s remarks, pointing out that no referees have been investigated or charged thus far in relation to the Negreira inquiry. Responding to questions about the union’s criticism, Alonso remarked, “It’s legitimate that everyone defends their own interests.”
Alonso’s Coaching Challenges
As the investigation unfolds, Alonso’s position as coach has come under scrutiny following a series of disappointing results for Real Madrid. Nevertheless, the team secured a vital 2-1 victory against Deportivo Alavés on Sunday, offering a glimmer of hope amid the challenges. “The situation before and after [Alavés] is the same: we have very good communication, we’re in this together,” Alonso stated.
Reports indicate that senior executives at Real Madrid have begun to question Alonso’s methods and player management in light of the team’s inconsistent form. Reflecting on his journey since taking on the role, Alonso observed, “The Xabi who arrived in June isn’t the same now… If we’re a better team in March than we are now, that’s good news, and at the end of the season, even better.”
The unfolding Negreira investigation combined with the pressures of team performance creates a complex landscape for Alonso as he navigates his responsibilities as head coach. The football community watches closely as developments continue to emerge from this significant case.
