The collapsed airline Blue Islands has been ordered to repay more than £17,000 to former pilot Mark Chadwick, who served as an airline captain until the company entered liquidation on November 17, 2025. The Employment and Discrimination Tribunal ruled in favor of Mr. Chadwick, who was owed payments related to a training bond he had signed as part of his employment.

Mr. Chadwick was required to pay a training bond of £20,000 upon joining Blue Islands. The airline was obligated to reimburse him in monthly installments over a period of three years. However, Mr. Chadwick only received five of these payments before the company’s financial collapse left him with an outstanding balance of £17,225.

Tribunal Ruling and Financial Implications

The tribunal chair, Dr. Elena Moran, delivered a judgment in default after Blue Islands chose not to contest the claim. The airline ceased operations at the end of last year, leaving significant debts, including £9.1 million owed to the government and nearly £3.3 million to the Ports of Jersey.

This ruling highlights the plight of employees affected by the airline’s sudden closure. Many former staff members are grappling with financial uncertainty, as the collapse of Blue Islands not only impacted pilots like Mr. Chadwick but also numerous ground staff and associated personnel.

As the airline industry continues to face challenges, this case serves as a reminder of the potential repercussions for employees when companies fail. The tribunal’s decision underscores the importance of accountability and the need for protections for workers in similar situations.

The financial landscape for Blue Islands remains precarious as it navigates its liquidation process. The airline’s debts pose significant challenges, and the outcome of its financial dealings will likely have lasting effects on its former employees and the wider community.
