Conan O’Brien Urges Comedians to Move Beyond Anti-Trump Focus
Comedian and former Late Night host Conan O’Brien has issued a cautionary message to fellow comedians, urging them not to make their critiques of US President Donald Trump the singular focus of their comedic content. Speaking at a panel hosted by the Oxford Union, O’Brien expressed concern that an overemphasis on anti-Trump sentiment risks diluting the effectiveness of comedic expression.
O’Brien emphasized that the current political climate has led some comedians to exchange genuine humour for unrestrained anger. He remarked, “Some comics go the route of, ‘I’m just gonna say F Trump all the time,’ or that’s their comedy.” He warned that this approach could lead to being “co-opted” by outrage, diminishing their ability to deliver impactful comedy.
During the discussion, O’Brien reflected on how this trend affects not only his peers but also the broader landscape of comedy. He specifically mentioned prominent figures such as Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel, noting that a consistent focus on anger might hinder their comedic artistry. “You’ve now put down your best weapon, which is being funny, and you’ve exchanged it for anger,” he stated.
In his view, the role of comedians should be to make audiences laugh, regardless of the political situation. O’Brien urged his colleagues to channel their frustrations creatively rather than resorting to repeated expressions of anger. “Good art will always be a perfect weapon against power, but if you’re just screaming or just angry, you’ve lost your best tool in your toolbox,” he said.
O’Brien also touched on the challenges of parodying the current political climate, drawing an analogy to his time at the Harvard Lampoon. He recalled the difficulties of satirizing the National Enquirer, highlighting a headline about Elvis that exemplified the absurdity of real-life events. “How do you parody that? You can’t,” he explained. “With Trump, we’ve got a similar situation in comedy.”
Despite his critical stance, O’Brien has consistently opposed the Trump administration. He voiced support for Kimmel, whose show faced suspension due to political commentary, calling such threats against talk show hosts concerning for audiences across the political spectrum.
O’Brien’s comments shed light on the evolving nature of comedy in the face of intense political discourse. As comedians navigate these turbulent waters, his insights serve as a reminder to prioritize humour over anger in order to connect meaningfully with their audiences.
