Greggs, the popular high street bakery chain, announced plans to open an additional 120 stores throughout 2026, following a year of significant growth and expansion. The company reported a total of 121 net store openings in 2025, bringing its total number of locations to 2,739 by the end of the year.

Despite these expansions, Greggs faced challenges as it revealed a decline in profits. The bakery chain’s statutory pre-tax profits fell by 17.9% to £167.4 million for the financial year ending December 27, 2025, compared to the previous year. Nevertheless, total sales increased by 6.8%, reaching £2.15 billion. The company attributed some of this growth to its ongoing store opening programme, which continues to enhance its market presence.

Future Growth Amid Economic Changes

Roisin Currie, Chief Executive of Greggs, expressed optimism about the company’s performance. She noted that the easing of inflationary pressures could stimulate stronger consumer spending. Currie emphasized the importance of convenient food options, stating, “demand for convenient food-on-the-go continues to underpin the market.”

Looking ahead, Greggs aims to grow its network to “significantly more than 3,000 UK shops over the longer term.” The company is committed to broadening access to its offerings through a robust pipeline of new store openings, engaging product launches, and enhanced customer interactions via the Greggs app.

As Greggs navigates the evolving economic landscape, its strategic initiatives reflect a commitment to adapting to consumer needs and solidifying its position in the competitive food retail sector. The upcoming year is poised to be pivotal as the company seeks to leverage both market conditions and its expansion strategy to achieve continued growth.
