O’Neill Discusses Celtic’s Callum Wilson Interest; Ipswich on Alert
Former Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has weighed in on the club’s interest in striker Callum Wilson, potentially affecting Ipswich Town’s pursuit of the player. Reports from Football Insider suggest that Ipswich is poised to offer Wilson an 18-month contract as they look to fend off competition from Celtic and Everton.
Wilson, currently with West Ham United, has found his opportunities limited this season, making only 17 appearances in the Premier League, where he has scored four goals and provided one assist. His recent absence from the squad during a 2-1 loss to Nottingham Forest and a 2-1 FA Cup victory over Queens Park Rangers has raised questions about his future with the London club.
O’Neill’s Insights on Wilson’s Future
In his recent comments, O’Neill acknowledged the need for Celtic to bolster their attacking options. However, he suggested that a transfer for Wilson may not materialize, indicating that the 33-year-old may have agreed to join another club once his contract is terminated. “We are in search of those elusive goal scorers, but we’re not the only team as well,” O’Neill said, as reported by Anthony Joseph on X. “On a serious note, no I can’t tell you anything but we are — is it becoming my favourite phrase? — we are making progress. I hadn’t thought about that, not that he’s not a very, very fine, a very fine player, but I thought he was going elsewhere.”
With Ipswich currently third in the Championship and just two points behind second-placed Middlesbrough, the Tractor Boys are eager to secure Wilson’s services to aid their promotion bid. They are also benefiting from a game in hand on Middlesbrough, further enhancing their chances. Ipswich aims to return to the Premier League at the first attempt after finishing 19th last season.
Implications for Ipswich and Wilson
For Ipswich, the potential acquisition of Wilson represents a significant opportunity. An 18-month contract reflects the club’s commitment to securing a player who, despite his age and fitness concerns, has demonstrated a capacity to contribute positively on the pitch. Wilson’s ability to score goals could be pivotal in Ipswich’s ongoing campaign, especially if he can maintain his form.
As Celtic appears to be stepping back from the race for Wilson, Ipswich may find themselves in a stronger position to finalize a deal. This would not only bolster their squad but also provide Wilson with a crucial role as they aim for success in the Championship. The team’s next challenge comes with a home match against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday at 15:00, where they will look to continue their push for promotion.
