US and Israel Launch Coordinated Strikes Against Iran
The United States and Israel initiated a series of military strikes against Iran on February 28, 2026, targeting multiple cities, including Teheran. Reports indicate at least three explosions were heard in the Iranian capital, followed by extensive damage throughout the country. President Donald Trump asserted that these military actions aim to eliminate threats to U.S. national security and provide Iranians with the opportunity to overthrow their current government.
The Israeli government declared a state of emergency in anticipation of potential Iranian retaliation, which could involve drone and ballistic missile attacks. In response to the strikes, large crowds gathered in Teheran to protest against American and Israeli actions, voicing their anger over the escalating conflict.
U.S. government broadcasting agencies have amplified Trump’s message to the Iranian people, urging them to rise against their leaders. The Voice of America (VOA) has reportedly enhanced its Persian language service in recent months, utilizing satellite technology to bypass Iranian internet restrictions. The agency stated, “The VOA service in Farsi has substantially expanded recently, delivering President Trump’s message directly to the brave Iranian people across all available platforms, including satellite.”
Despite these efforts, the impact of Trump’s calls for regime change in Iran remains uncertain. In a recent video address, he encouraged Iranians to “take back their government” following the U.S. military operations and called on regime forces to surrender.
Casualties and Damage from the Strikes
Among the casualties reported from the Israeli attacks are Amir Nasirzadeh, the Iranian Minister of Defense, and Mohammed Pakpour, a commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). These claims have been corroborated by multiple sources familiar with Israeli military operations.
Iranian state media reported that the strikes targeted several locations across the country, primarily in the central and northwestern regions. Notably, an attack on the complex associated with Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei was highlighted, with satellite images showing plumes of black smoke rising from the site. As of now, it remains unclear whether Khamenei was present during the attack.
Additional reports suggest that Ali Shamkhani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council and a key advisor to Khamenei, may have also been killed in the strikes. Shamkhani has long been a foundational figure in Iran’s security apparatus.
Iran’s Response and Regional Tensions
In retaliation, Iran has reportedly targeted major cities of Gulf monarchies, leading to at least one fatality in the United Arab Emirates. The Iranian response has heightened fears of a broader conflict across the Middle East. Israel Katz, Israel’s Minister of Defense, stated that the strikes were intended to mitigate existential threats posed by the Iranian regime.
Amidst the escalating tensions, air raid sirens have activated across Israel, prompting authorities to prepare for immediate counterattacks. Emergency measures have been implemented nationwide, with citizens advised to follow directives from the Home Front Command and remain in secure areas until further notice.
Israeli intelligence and military services anticipate a significant retaliatory strike from Iran, potentially involving swarms of drones and ballistic missiles. In cities across Israel, residents are already reporting the sound of warning sirens as the situation develops.
During the conflict, President Trump confirmed the coordinated military operation via a post on Truth Social, stating, “Our goal is to defend the American people by eliminating immediate threats posed by the Iranian regime.” He condemned Iran’s ongoing hostile rhetoric, which he characterized as a campaign of violence targeting the United States.
In a broader context, Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad, has issued a call for Iranians to aid in restoring Iran to its “glorious days.” The agency has launched a secure Telegram channel to facilitate communication with Iranian citizens, encouraging them to share their experiences and support efforts against the regime.
As the situation unfolds, the repercussions of the U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran remain to be seen, with significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
