A man has been charged after an elderly woman in Wolverhampton was deceived into handing over nearly £10,000 in cash. The incident, which highlights the growing threat of courier fraud, involved a woman in her 80s who was contacted by an individual impersonating a police officer.

According to West Midlands Police, the victim was informed over the phone that there was an issue with counterfeit bank notes being deposited into her account. The caller persuaded her to withdraw a substantial sum of money, claiming it would need to be collected by a courier.

The woman complied, agreeing to meet this so-called courier at her residence in the Graiseley area of Wolverhampton on January 21, 2024, where she handed over the cash. On the following day, January 22, when another courier arrived to attempt to extract more money, members of the public intervened, prompting a call to law enforcement.

The suspect, identified as Sahil Rabbani, a 22-year-old from Hackney, London, was subsequently arrested. He has been charged with two counts of fraud, including fraud by false representation and attempted fraud by false representation.

A spokesperson for West Midlands Police stated, “A man’s due in court after a woman was tricked into handing over nearly £10,000. The victim had been phoned by someone posing as a police officer, who tricked her into withdrawing the cash by saying there was a problem with fake bank notes being deposited into her account.”

Rabbani is expected to appear at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court on January 24. The police continue to support the victim in this case, urging the public to remain vigilant against such scams.

As instances of courier fraud become more prevalent, authorities emphasize the importance of verifying the identity of anyone requesting personal information or money. Vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly, are often targeted by fraudsters, making awareness and education crucial in preventing such crimes.
