AI Innovations and Founders Shine at NYU’s China–US Competition

The Second China–US Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, hosted by New York University, concluded successfully on November 22, 2023, at Vanderbilt Hall in New York City. This event gathered over 300 participants, including founders and investment institutions from both China and the United States. The competition focused on enhancing bilateral exchanges in technological innovation and early-stage entrepreneurship, aiming to integrate these two ecosystems across talent, technology, and capital.

This year’s theme, “Openness, Innovation, and Connection,” emphasized the importance of artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications in various sectors such as multimedia marketing, new-energy technology, gaming, and healthcare. Organizers noted that both nations possess unique strengths in AI and the broader startup landscape, providing young entrepreneurs with a platform to showcase their innovations and foster cross-cultural cooperation.

A notable trend among the submissions this year was the increasing integration of AI technologies into vertical industry scenarios. Among the eight finalists, several teams presented innovative solutions that leverage AI to address specific industry needs, highlighting the potential for transformative advancements.

To gain insight into the challenges and opportunities faced by AI founders, we spoke with Chenxi Huang (commonly known as Chelsey), a prominent quantitative investor and entrepreneurship mentor. Having founded multiple startups, Chelsey offers a unique perspective, evaluating early-stage companies with a comprehensive understanding of market dynamics and operational hurdles.

In discussing the essential qualities of an exceptional AI founder, Chelsey emphasized the significance of foresight over mere intelligence. “You must act one or two steps ahead of the market. If you simply follow trends, you will always be chasing the tail end of a wave,” she stated. According to her, true founders need to anticipate industry shifts and validate their ideas early on.

Team-building is another critical aspect for early-stage entrepreneurs, as Chelsey elaborated. “Entrepreneurship is not about one person grinding alone—it’s about inspiring others to follow your conviction,” she said. She believes that a well-aligned team often outperforms individual technical breakthroughs, underscoring the need for shared vision and collaboration.

The conversation also touched on the situation of women founders in the Silicon Valley innovation ecosystem. Chelsey remarked on the challenges women face in building confidence and presence within the competitive landscape. She urged women to match the ambition of their male counterparts, advocating for positioning themselves as founders rather than identifying solely as female founders.

Chelsey also highlighted key technical trends observed in this year’s AI projects. Many teams are utilizing open-source large models, signifying a shift in the technological landscape. “China’s models have advanced rapidly in the past two years; systems like Qwen and DeepSeek are enabling founders worldwide,” she explained. The accessibility of resources and the ability to conduct quicker experiments are accelerating the path to product-market fit for early-stage teams.

Looking ahead, Chelsey predicts that 2026 will be a pivotal year for AI applications as they enter full-scale industry deployment. Founders from both China and the United States will find themselves competing and collaborating, shaping the next generation of tech companies.
