Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a commanding 6-1 victory against Shrewsbury Town in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup at Molineux Stadium on January 7, 2024. The home side took an early lead, with Jorgen Strand Larsen and Jhon Arias finding the net within the first 11 minutes, setting the tone for a dominant performance.

Shrewsbury had a brief moment of hope when John Marquis converted a penalty after being fouled by Arias. However, Wolves quickly restored their two-goal advantage before halftime when Elyh Harrison inadvertently assisted Strand Larsen, who scored his second. The Norwegian striker completed his hat-trick just 13 minutes into the second half, and late goals from substitutes Rodrigo Gomes and Tolu Arokodare capped off an emphatic win for the Premier League side.

Edwards, the Wolves manager, expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress. Despite their struggles at the bottom of the Premier League table, he noted that the players are beginning to “click” following a run of four unbeaten matches.

Manager’s Reflections on Team Performance

“It was a good day all round and nice for the supporters to celebrate some goals,” Edwards said. “What could’ve been a tricky day turned out to be an enjoyable one. I’d be foolish to make wholesale changes when we’re just starting to build momentum.”

The manager emphasized the importance of maintaining form and building confidence within the squad. “If you look further back, we have had good performances, and the lads were believing then. It’s nice for supporters to see some results,” he added.

Strand Larsen’s performance has drawn attention, particularly as speculation surrounds his future at the club. While Edwards did not dismiss the possibility of the striker’s departure during the January transfer window, he praised Strand Larsen’s commitment to the team.

“He’s really pleased. His attitude has been great, and he understands why he hasn’t started the last few games,” Edwards remarked. “His commitment has never wavered. While we are in the window, there is always going to be speculation because we have good players. If it’s right for the football club, we will see, but at the moment, there is nothing to talk about.”

Shrewsbury’s Struggles Continue

On the other side, Shrewsbury Town endured their fifth consecutive defeat across all competitions. Manager Michael Appleton acknowledged the challenges his team faced against a formidable opponent.

“There were big moments that made a huge impact in the game. Going 2-0 down in the first 10 minutes made it difficult, but the lads reacted well,” Appleton noted. “We’ve faced Wolves at a good time for them, and their quality showed.”

Despite the heavy scoreline, Appleton viewed the match as a valuable learning experience for his players. “For as bad as the scoreline might suggest, it’s a bit of a reality check against a Premier League side,” he stated. “Wolves displayed simplicity at its best, executing the basics with ease.”

As the FA Cup continues, both teams will look to build on their respective performances, with Wolves aiming to maintain their positive momentum and Shrewsbury seeking to turn their fortunes around.
